Democracy North Carolina
Elections are safest when ALL voters have ready and free access to the ballot. Expanding the Voter ID law in our Constitution does nothing to protect our elections and only harms North Carolinians. Voter ID is already the law in North Carolina, and this amendment could create additional barriers to voters, particularly around absentee voting for those living overseas and serving in the military. This unnecessary amendment would also double down on the deeply troubling voting disparities in our state – this would make it harder for Black, brown and poorer North Carolinians to vote. And we know that Voter ID is part of a long history of race-based voter suppression in North Carolina with a direct negative impact on those in Black and brown communities. This is an active deterrent to voting, it silences the voices of future voters, and it makes it even more difficult to remove or make changes to existing photo ID law.
