Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools has a distinctive funding model that has helped our community maintain educational services and staffing beyond what state and regular county funding alone provide.
A critical part of that model is our supplemental school-district property tax, which provides $30.1 million in funding this year alone.
The proposed constitutional amendment would require limits on future increases in local property-tax collections, with the actual limits to be determined later by state lawmakers.
If those limits prevent local funding from keeping pace with rising costs, the impact on CHCCS could be devastating, jeopardizing staffing, classroom resources, student services, and the educational opportunities our district has worked to maintain.
