Vance County Board of Commissioners
Staff recommends that the Board of County Commissioners adopt the resolution opposing modifications to county property tax authority in light of ongoing discussions by the North Carolina General Assembly’s Property Tax Reduction and Reform Committee. Property taxes remain a primary and stable source of local revenue necessary to fund essential services, including public safety, infrastructure, public health, and education. The proposed resolution affirms the County’s position that maintaining local authority over property tax decisions is critical to ensuring fiscal stability and responsiveness to community needs. As the Committee evaluates potential measures such as caps, limitations, or structural changes to property tax authority, there is concern that such actions could significantly reduce local flexibility and negatively impact the County’s ability to meet service demands and long term obligations.
Recommendation: Approve the resolution affirming the Board’s position in opposition to potential legislative changes under consideration and support the preservation of local control, transparency, and accountability in the County’s budgeting and financial management processes.
